Maharashtra leads vehicle sales in India's first quarter; UP dominates two-wheelers
Maharashtra recorded the strongest sales of passenger and commercial vehicles in April-June, while Uttar Pradesh topped the two and three-wheeler segments, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

India's automotive sector sold 12.74 lakh passenger vehicles during the first quarter of fiscal 2026-27, with the western region accounting for 3.9 lakh units of this total, SIAM said on Monday.
Maharashtra emerged as the country's largest passenger vehicle market with 1,47,440 units sold in the quarter ending June 30, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 1,35,329 units. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu rounded out the top five with 98,785, 98,315, and 96,327 units respectively.
In commercial vehicles, domestic sales reached 2.65 lakh units, with the western zone again leading at 91,000 units. Maharashtra dominated this category with 36,433 units, ahead of Tamil Nadu (24,743 units), Karnataka (21,830 units), Gujarat (21,778 units), and Uttar Pradesh (21,161 units).
The two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments, which represent the largest vehicle categories by volume in India, saw Uttar Pradesh claiming the top position. Industry body SIAM noted that these segments continued to drive growth across the country's automotive market.
