Maharashtra is facing acute water scarcity, prompting authorities to mobilise 611 water tankers across the state to meet drinking water demands. The measure comes as a central government team conducts an on-ground assessment of the drought situation affecting multiple districts.
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Divisional Commissioner G Srikant apprised the visiting panel of the severity of the crisis, highlighting substantial rainfall deficits compared to normal levels. The commissioner detailed widespread Kharif crop losses that have compounded the agricultural distress in the region, leaving farmers facing significant economic hardship.
Beyond drinking water shortages, the state is grappling with acute fodder deficiency, threatening livestock survival. The convergence of multiple challenges—inadequate rainfall, failed harvests, and resource scarcity—has created a complex humanitarian situation requiring coordinated state and central intervention.
The central team's visit signals growing concern at the national level about Maharashtra's drought conditions. Officials are expected to evaluate relief requirements and coordinate support measures to assist affected communities and farmers navigating the ongoing crisis.
