District Collector S Karthikeyan has confirmed that the Maharashtra government is substantially scaling back its initial data centre proposal in response to community concerns. The revision represents a significant shift in approach as officials seek to balance economic development with local welfare.

The original plan had generated considerable anxiety among residents and agricultural communities who raised questions about potential environmental impact, water usage, and land acquisition. Karthikeyan sought to address these concerns by characterizing the revised proposal as neither an exploitative industrial venture nor a high-risk facility, signalling the government's commitment to a more measured approach.

The modified plan aims to address key community concerns while retaining the strategic value of establishing a data centre facility in the region. Officials indicated that further consultations with stakeholders would inform the final implementation strategy.

Data centre development has emerged as a contentious issue across several Indian states as companies seek locations for server facilities to support cloud computing and digital infrastructure. Maharashtra's experience reflects broader tensions between technological advancement and local community protection that policymakers are navigating across the country.
