Maharashtra secures $357 million ADB loan for major health infrastructure expansion

The Maharashtra cabinet has given its green light to a substantial borrowing arrangement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) valued at ₹2,975 crore to fund an ambitious health infrastructure development programme. The project aims to strengthen healthcare delivery systems and expand medical facilities across the state.

As part of the initiative, the government will establish new hospital facilities designed to enhance access to quality healthcare services. The expansion is projected to generate around 2,430 employment opportunities across various cadres, from medical professionals to support staff.

The state has earmarked an annual budgetary allocation of ₹147.7 crore to cover salary expenditure for personnel to be hired under the project. This recurring expenditure underscores the government's commitment to sustaining the newly created positions and ensuring adequate staffing levels at the health facilities.

The ADB funding represents a significant step in Maharashtra's efforts to modernise its healthcare infrastructure and address capacity gaps in the state's medical system. The project aligns with broader initiatives to improve health outcomes and strengthen public health services across the region.
