Maharashtra set to revive student elections with new framework by January

Student elections in Maharashtra's universities are poised for a comeback after nearly five years of suspension, with state authorities working toward finalising new rules by January. The revised framework is intended to address concerns that prompted the halt of campus polls in 2019, while enabling universities to resume electoral processes for student bodies.

The suspension of student elections since 2019 has left Maharashtra's university campuses without formal student representation mechanisms. Educational administrators and state officials have been deliberating on governance structures and electoral procedures to ensure fair and transparent conduct of future campus elections.

Once the revised rules are approved, universities across Maharashtra will be able to conduct elections for student unions and representative bodies. The new framework is expected to incorporate safeguards against malpractices while maintaining the democratic participation of the student community in university affairs.

Educational institutions in the state have been preparing for the potential reinstatement, with administrative committees reviewing electoral procedures and voter registration systems. The January deadline marks a critical juncture in the state's efforts to restore student governance structures that have remained dormant for several years.
