Maharashtra will begin action against taxi and commercial vehicle drivers who lack adequate Marathi language skills or the required certification, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced. The enforcement drive is scheduled to commence from August 20.
Drivers found non-compliant will initially receive warning notices directing them to obtain the necessary Marathi language qualification or demonstrate working knowledge of the language. The state's transport department will provide a grace period for drivers to meet the requirements.
Those who fail to comply within the specified timeframe face stricter penalties. The transport authority is empowered to suspend driver's licences and vehicle badges for up to three months as a corrective measure. Repeat violations may invite additional penalties.
The move is part of Maharashtra's policy to ensure commercial vehicle operators possess functional proficiency in the state's official language, aimed at improving communication between drivers and passengers. The transport department has clarified that the enforcement will be implemented uniformly across all regions of the state.
