Maharashtra transport workers plan escalating protest action before Diwali

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) workers' unions have announced plans for escalating protest action starting in early November, signalling mounting tensions within the state's transport sector ahead of the Diwali festival period.

The protest campaign will commence with a workers' procession in Mumbai on November 3, according to union announcements. A delegation will then travel to Nagpur on November 4 to present grievances at the state Assembly, ramping up pressure on policymakers during the legislative session.

From November 5 onwards, the protest will enter a more intensive phase, with workers staging sit-in demonstrations at MSRTC offices and departmental headquarters across Maharashtra. The timing of the action, coinciding with the pre-Diwali period when transport demand typically peaks, underscores the unions' intention to maximize impact and compel management attention to their demands.

The unions have formally issued protest notices to authorities, following standard procedures for organized industrial action. The nature of specific demands has not been detailed, though MSRTC staff have historically raised concerns around wages, working conditions, and job security.

The action adds to recent friction in Maharashtra's transport sector and may impact services during a period of heightened travel demand as families prepare for Diwali festivities across the state.
