Maharashtra village stages unique protest over water crisis

Villagers in Tulsi, located in the Madha taluka of Solapur district, have initiated an unusual demonstration to highlight their acute water shortage and demand action from state authorities. For the past quarter-century, residents have petitioned officials to connect their settlement to the Sina-Madha Upsa irrigation scheme, which supplies water to other nearby areas.

The water crisis has intensified in recent years due to below-average monsoon rainfall, leaving agricultural productivity severely impacted and forcing many families to seek alternative water sources. Despite repeated appeals to government bodies, the village remains disconnected from the irrigation network that could provide relief.

The protest reflects growing frustration among rural communities over incomplete water infrastructure projects in the region. Solapur district, located in the state's drought-prone Marathwada region, has long grappled with water scarcity issues during dry seasons.

Local officials have not yet issued statements regarding the timeline for connecting Tulsi village to the irrigation scheme or alternative measures to address the water emergency.
