Authorities have flagged a minor flood risk along the Mahaweli River, prompting precautionary measures in affected areas. Residents in downstream regions are advised to remain vigilant as water levels fluctuate.

Water authorities monitoring the Mahaweli River, Sri Lanka's longest river, have issued a minor flood alert affecting communities along its course. The cautionary advisory comes as rainfall and upstream water discharge conditions warrant heightened vigilance in vulnerable localities downstream.
Residents and local officials in the Mahaweli basin have been advised to take preventive measures and remain alert to changing water conditions. The alert is not expected to escalate to dangerous levels, though minor inundation of low-lying areas remains possible.
The Mahaweli Development Authority and relevant disaster management agencies continue to monitor river levels closely. Stakeholders have been instructed to activate contingency plans where necessary and to disseminate timely warnings to potentially affected populations.
Authorities recommend that communities maintain awareness of weather patterns and official updates, particularly those residing in flood-prone zones near the river. Further assessments will be conducted as conditions develop.
