Mahayuti secures two seats in Maharashtra MLC polls as counting continues

The Maharashtra Legislative Council elections delivered mixed results for the state's political establishment, with counting still underway for the remaining contested seats. The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena, and NCP, secured two seats in the initial phase of results, underlining a competitive electoral contest across the state.

Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance showed strength by leading on two seats, with the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) emerging as a strong contender. The NCP(SP) faction, which broke away from the ruling NCP, demonstrated its organisational capacity ahead of the state assembly elections due later this year.

The performance appears to have triggered introspection within the ruling establishment. Senior NCP leader Praful Patel acknowledged the setback for his party faction, calling for internal deliberation on the electoral outcome. Political observers view the results as an indicator of shifting voter sentiment in the state, particularly given the splintering of the NCP between two factions backing different alliances.

With counting continuing for additional seats, the final tally is expected to provide a clearer picture of the balance of forces in Maharashtra's political landscape. The elections are seen as a significant barometer ahead of the state assembly polls later this year.
