Mahjong fraud mastermind jailed two years, fined $15,000

Marcus Ang Yi Sheng was found guilty of masterminding a conspiracy to cheat victims in rigged mahjong games, a district court heard. The 2-year jail sentence and financial penalty were imposed following his conviction on the fraud charges.

Beyond the primary offence, Ang's case took a darker turn with allegations that he had threatened to throw an accomplice from the eighth-floor balcony of a residential condominium unit. The threat marked an escalation in what authorities described as a coordinated criminal enterprise targeting mahjong players.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about organized fraud schemes centred on popular gaming activities in the region. Authorities have intensified efforts to crack down on such operations, which often involve collusion between multiple parties to systematically defraud participants of significant sums of money.

The sentence reflects the seriousness with which the courts treat organized fraud and intimidation offences, sending a deterrent message to potential offenders engaged in similar schemes.
