The earthquake, recorded by the US Geological Survey, struck southern Panama and immediately triggered a cascade of tsunami warnings across the region. The US National Weather Service issued alerts for Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Guatemala in response to the tremor. Chile's naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service also issued a tsunami warning for its Pacific coastline, indicating the quake's far-reaching impact across the Western Hemisphere.

Tsunami warnings represent a precautionary measure issued when significant earthquakes occur near or beneath oceanic areas, as such events can generate dangerous waves capable of affecting distant coastlines. Authorities in affected nations typically recommend that residents in coastal areas move to higher ground and avoid beaches and harbours until warnings are lifted.

The 7.7 magnitude quake registers as a major seismic event on the Richter scale. The Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of intense volcanic and seismic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean, accounts for approximately 90 per cent of the world's earthquakes, with Central America forming a particularly active zone along this fault line.

Officials across the warned nations have activated emergency response protocols, with coastal communities on high alert. Authorities typically monitor sea level readings and seismic data to determine whether evacuation orders should remain in place or be lifted. Preliminary damage assessments were underway as information continued to emerge.
