Major FMCG stocks tumble to 52-week lows as sector underperforms

Major FMCG stocks have declined to their lowest valuations in 52 weeks, with household names such as Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Dabur India, Emami and Godrej Consumer Products all sliding to year-low levels.

The underperformance is particularly pronounced when measured against the broader market. Over the past month, the BSE FMCG index fell 3.3 per cent, a steeper decline than the 1.5 per cent drop recorded by the BSE Sensex during the same period.

The divergence underscores mounting headwinds facing India's consumer goods sector, which has faced mounting pressures from input costs, competitive pricing dynamics and shifting consumer spending patterns. The weakness in major FMCG stocks suggests investor concerns about earnings sustainability and margin pressures across the sector.

The sell-off marks a significant reversal for stocks that have historically been considered defensive investments, raising questions about the resilience of consumer spending in the current economic environment.
