Major Indian cities grapple with worsening air quality as winter sets in

Air pollution has intensified across India's major metropolitan centres, with Chennai and Mumbai reporting hazardous air quality readings that pose health risks to residents. The seasonal winter months have triggered a surge in particulate matter concentrations, prompting health advisories in affected cities.

A comprehensive assessment of six major urban centres reveals a mixed picture of air quality conditions. While five cities recorded air quality index readings in the moderate category—indicating acceptable air quality for the general population—the situation in Chennai and Mumbai has crossed into unhealthy territory, where vulnerable groups face heightened respiratory risks.

Kolkata emerged as an outlier in the comparison, maintaining satisfactory air quality levels despite the season. The variation in pollution levels across cities reflects differences in local weather patterns, traffic congestion, industrial activity, and construction practices.

Environmental experts attribute the deterioration in air quality to reduced wind speeds and increased atmospheric stability typical of winter months, which trap pollutants near ground level. The situation is expected to remain critical in Chennai and Mumbai through the peak winter season, with authorities recommending that residents limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers where possible.

Civic agencies in affected cities have initiated measures including traffic management and dust-suppression drives to mitigate air pollution levels. Residents are advised to monitor daily air quality forecasts and take necessary precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
