Major Malaysian highways gridlocked as Deepavali exodus begins

Motorists heading home for the Deepavali celebrations are facing substantial delays on several critical transportation corridors. The slowdown, which has built progressively throughout the day, reflects the traditional surge in vehicular movement as families travel to reunite for the Hindu festival.

The Malaysian Highway Authority identified three principal routes experiencing congestion. PLUS highway, which spans the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, has been particularly affected, with traffic moving at reduced speeds during peak travel windows. The Johor Causeway, connecting Peninsular Malaysia to Singapore, and the Second Link Expressway have similarly reported slower-than-normal traffic flows.

Authorities typically anticipate elevated congestion during major holiday periods in Malaysia, as residents embark on intercity journeys for festivities and family gatherings. The Deepavali holiday, celebrated by Malaysia's Hindu and Indian communities, traditionally prompts significant cross-country travel as people return to their hometowns.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and exercise patience during peak travel hours. The Malaysian Highway Authority continues to monitor traffic conditions and manages flow through existing traffic management protocols.
