Two of India's largest trade union federations staged separate rallies on Tuesday to highlight long-standing demands for enhanced worker protections and wage improvements. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) held parallel demonstrations in major cities, with each organisation deploying its membership to press their respective agendas with government and employers.
Both unions mobilised workers to demand better minimum wages, job security provisions, and amendments to labour codes introduced in recent years. The rallies reflected frustration among organised labour over what they view as insufficient government action on employment standards and workplace safety measures.
The parallel nature of the demonstrations highlighted ongoing fragmentation within India's trade union movement, where multiple federations representing different ideological positions often struggle to present a unified front. Despite sharing common worker grievances, coordination between the major union bodies remains limited, constraining their collective bargaining power at the national level.
Labour analysts noted that such divisions have historically weakened the labour movement's ability to influence policy decisions. Calls for greater unity among trade unions have grown louder as informal sector employment continues expanding and gig economy work reshapes traditional labour relationships across the country.
