Majority of Singapore firms adopt AI for HR, human oversight remains critical
A new survey shows artificial intelligence is now widely used in human resources functions across Singapore's business landscape, though most organisations maintain human approval for key decisions. Large enterprises are leading adoption compared to smaller firms, reflecting broader patterns in workplace digitalisation.

Artificial intelligence has become a standard tool in Singapore's HR departments, with the majority of companies now incorporating AI into their people management processes, according to findings released by the Singapore National Employers Federation. However, the survey reveals that human judgment remains central to organisational decision-making, with staff sign-off required in approximately 85 per cent of cases where AI is deployed. This hybrid approach suggests employers are adopting AI selectively to enhance efficiency while retaining human oversight for sensitive personnel matters. The federation's data indicates that larger corporations are significantly more likely than small and medium-sized enterprises to implement AI systems in HR functions. This disparity reflects both the greater resources available to multinational and large local firms, as well as their capacity to manage more complex technological infrastructure. SMEs, which form the backbone of Singapore's economy, appear to be adopting AI tools more cautiously, potentially due to cost and implementation constraints. The findings suggest a measured approach to workplace automation, with Singapore's business community valuing AI's potential to streamline administrative tasks while preserving the human element in decisions affecting employee welfare and organisational culture. As digitalisation accelerates across the region, the survey indicates that Singapore's employers recognise AI as a complementary tool rather than a replacement for human judgment in matters requiring discretion and contextual understanding.
