Malappuram DDC opposes proposed split of Palakkad railway division

The Malappuram District Development Committee (DDC) has submitted a formal request to the Centre to abandon the proposed bifurcation of the Palakkad railway division, warning that the administrative restructuring would hamper ongoing and planned railway development initiatives in the district.

According to the DDC's assessment, the proposed split would negatively impact rail services and infrastructure expansion across Malappuram, north Malabar, and Kasaragod. The committee contends that consolidating railway operations under a single division is essential for coordinated planning and efficient service delivery across these districts.

The Palakkad railway division, which oversees operations across a significant portion of Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu, currently manages multiple important corridors and passenger services. A division of administrative responsibility, the DDC argues, could create jurisdictional complications and slow down decision-making processes critical for modernisation and expansion projects.

The district committee's intervention reflects growing concerns among local stakeholders about railway administrative restructuring in the region. Officials have emphasised that any organisational changes to railway divisions should prioritise seamless connectivity and development priorities of the affected districts before implementation.
