Malay interests can be advanced without oppressing minorities, says Umno Youth chief

KUALA LUMPUR — Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh on Wednesday sought to draw a distinction between advancing Malay-Muslim interests and suppressing other ethnic groups, emphasizing that both objectives can coexist within Malaysia's constitutional framework.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the balance between special provisions for Malays and Muslims under Article 153 of the Federal Constitution and the protection of minority rights. Dr Akmal stressed that defending constitutional safeguards for the Malay-Muslim community does not necessitate discrimination against other races.
"Efforts to unite the Malay-Muslim community and protect their constitutional rights should not be construed as an attempt to marginalize other races," he said, adding that Malaysia's strength lies in its ability to accommodate diverse interests through dialogue and mutual respect.
The comments reflect broader efforts within Umno to navigate the delicate issue of communal representation and national cohesion as Malaysia grapples with questions about the application of constitutionally-enshrined special rights.
