Malay Reserve Land Comprises Over 91% of Kelantan's Titled Property

KOTA BHARU — Malay Reserve Land in Kelantan totaled 526,083.08 hectares as of June 2024, accounting for 91.58 percent of all titled land in the state, according to the Menteri Besar's office.

The substantial proportion reflects the historical framework of Malay Reserve Land, which has been designated under Malaysian law to protect and preserve land ownership within the Malay community. Kelantan, as a traditional Malay-majority state, maintains one of the highest concentrations of such reserved land in the country.

The figures are typically maintained by state land offices and represent registered titles within the state's jurisdiction. Malay Reserve Land can only be owned by Malays and Muslims, with certain exceptions for government purposes, and transfers or leases require state approval.

Kelantan's substantial reserve land holdings reflect both the state's demographic composition and the implementation of constitutional provisions designed to safeguard Malay-Muslim interests in land ownership. The data provides a snapshot of property distribution in one of Malaysia's key northeastern states.
