Malaysia aims to attract 250,000 international students by 2030

Malaysia's Minister of Higher Education Zambry Abd Kadir announced the country's plan to reach 250,000 international students by 2030, marking a significant expansion of the nation's higher education sector. The announcement was made following the closing ceremony of the International Young Future Leaders Summit 2026 (iFuture 2026).

Currently, Malaysia hosts around 170,000 international students representing 180 different countries, demonstrating the nation's appeal as a regional education hub. The government's new enrollment target reflects efforts to strengthen Malaysia's position as a leading destination for tertiary education in Asia-Pacific.

The initiative aligns with Malaysia's broader economic diversification strategy as the country positions itself among fast-growing Asia-Pacific economies. Officials have identified higher education as a key growth sector that attracts talent and investment to the nation.

To support increased student enrollment, Malaysia has also announced measures including airfare assistance for thousands of university students, reducing financial barriers to education. These policies underscore the government's commitment to making Malaysian institutions more accessible to international learners while boosting the nation's education exports.
