Malaysia applies consistent standards on heterodox teachings: Religion Minister

Minister Zulkifli Hasan said on Tuesday that the government applies uniform criteria when addressing allegations of teachings that contradict Islamic doctrine, rejecting claims of selective enforcement.

The minister's statement came in response to contentions from appellants who alleged inconsistency in how authorities dealt with separate cases involving different organisations accused of promoting doctrinal deviations.

"There is no differentiation in our approach to these matters," Hasan said, emphasising that decisions are based on established religious and legal frameworks rather than organisational identity.

The comments reflect ongoing government scrutiny of groups accused of promoting teachings deemed contrary to mainstream Islamic doctrine in Malaysia. Authorities have previously taken action against various movements and organisations operating within the country on similar grounds.

Hasan's remarks suggest the government views such enforcement actions as driven by consistent application of religious standards rather than selective targeting.
