Malaysia approves online learning for universities during Deepavali break

Malaysian public universities have received official approval to shift teaching and learning activities to online or hybrid delivery modes during the Deepavali celebration week, the Education Ministry confirmed. The authorization covers the period from November 5 to November 13, allowing institutions flexibility in maintaining academic continuity while accommodating the festive period.

The ministry's decision reflects efforts to balance academic calendars with major cultural and religious observances celebrated by Malaysia's diverse population. The move enables students and staff to observe Deepavali, a significant festival in the Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist communities, without disrupting the academic year.

Public tertiary institutions have been granted discretion to implement either fully online classes or hybrid learning arrangements during this period. This approach maintains teaching schedules while providing accommodation for the holiday, allowing students and academic staff to participate in festival celebrations.

The authorization applies specifically to public institutions of higher education (IPTA) across the country. Institutions are expected to implement the arrangements according to their operational capabilities and student demographics. The Education Ministry's directive aims to support both academic progress and cultural observance among the university community.
