Malaysia blocks Datasonic takeover, strengthens MyKad security oversight
The government has rejected a potential acquisition of identity document printer Datasonic Technologies, citing national security concerns over Malaysia's passport and MyKad systems. The decision reinforces state control over critical identity infrastructure.

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia's government has moved to block a takeover of Datasonic Technologies Sdn Bhd, asserting that sensitive identity systems including MyKad smart cards and passport production must remain under strict state supervision. The National Security Council determined that allowing the company to change ownership would pose unacceptable risks to the integrity and security of national identity documents. Rather than acquire the company outright, authorities will implement enhanced oversight measures to safeguard these critical systems. Datasonic has long served as the primary contractor for producing Malaysia's identity documents, making control of the company strategically significant. The government's position reflects growing global scrutiny of supply chains for sensitive biometric and identification infrastructure, particularly following security breaches at identity management firms in other nations. Malaysian officials emphasised that maintaining domestic operational control over passport and MyKad production serves the country's national interest and protects citizen data from external vulnerabilities. The enhanced oversight framework will establish tighter regulatory requirements for the company's operations while preserving its operational role in document production. No alternative arrangements or buyout timeline has been announced as authorities focus on implementing the new supervisory framework.
