Malaysia blocks over 101 million fraud calls in eight months
Malaysian communications regulator SKMM has successfully intercepted more than 101 million fraudulent calls since the beginning of 2024. The achievement comes through implementation of the Inter Operator Spoofing Gateway initiative launched earlier this year.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Authority (SKMM) has made significant progress in combating telecommunications fraud, blocking 101.66 million malicious calls through August 2024, according to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching.
The breakthrough in call interception has been achieved through the deployment of the Inter Operator Spoofing Gateway initiative, which commenced operations at the start of 2024. The system works across multiple telecommunications operators to identify and block calls using spoofed numbers—a common tactic employed by scammers to impersonate legitimate organisations and deceive victims.
The initiative represents a coordinated effort among Malaysian telcos to enhance network security and protect consumers from falling victim to fraud schemes. By filtering malicious calls at the gateway level before they reach consumers, the system aims to reduce the volume of scam attempts reaching the public.
The blocking figures underscore the scale of telecommunications fraud affecting Malaysia's mobile and fixed-line networks. With scam calls continuing to proliferate globally, the inter-operator approach allows Malaysia to leverage combined technological resources and data-sharing protocols to improve detection accuracy.
The SKMM's efforts align with broader regional and international initiatives to tackle telecommunications-enabled fraud, a persistent challenge facing both consumers and regulators across Asia-Pacific.
