Malaysia braces for extreme heat as El Niño intensifies next year

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an alert regarding an intensifying El Niño event expected to bring extreme heat conditions to Malaysia in the coming months. Temperatures in several parts of the country are projected to soar beyond 40°C, with March identified as the critical period when conditions are likely to reach their peak severity.

El Niño, a recurring climate pattern characterized by warming ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, typically results in drier conditions and elevated temperatures across Southeast Asia. The current forecast suggests this year's El Niño will be particularly strong, amplifying the risk of heat-related impacts across the region.

MetMalaysia has recommended that individuals and organisations take precautions against heat stress, including staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during peak hours, and monitoring vulnerable populations. The meteorological authority is continuing to monitor atmospheric conditions and will issue updated forecasts as the pattern develops.

The warning comes as Malaysia prepares contingency measures to address potential impacts on water supply, agriculture, and electricity demand during the hottest months. Residents and businesses are advised to prepare for the elevated temperatures and plan accordingly for the months ahead.
