KUALA LUMPUR — The government is considering extending tax relief provisions to Malaysian pet owners as part of Budget 2027, potentially allowing deductions for veterinary care and related expenses.
Under the proposed measure, pet owners could claim tax relief on costs associated with animal adoption, vaccination programmes and sterilisation procedures. The initiative represents an expansion of the tax relief framework to recognise pet ownership as a legitimate household expense.
The exact quantum of potential tax savings remains subject to finalisation by the Ministry of Finance, with detailed parameters to be announced alongside the full budget presentation. Officials have indicated the relief would apply to documented expenses incurred at registered veterinary facilities.
Veterinary associations have welcomed the proposal, noting it could improve animal welfare by encouraging more owners to pursue preventive healthcare and adoption rather than purchasing from breeders. The relief is expected to particularly benefit lower and middle-income households managing multiple pets.
Pet ownership has grown significantly across Malaysia in recent years, with growing recognition of animals' contributions to household wellbeing and mental health support.
