Malaysia calls for greater burden-sharing on Rohingya refugee crisis

Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has made a fresh appeal to the global community to increase burden-sharing in addressing the protracted Rohingya refugee crisis, signalling growing strain on the country's capacity to host the displaced population.

Hasan stressed that achieving a sustainable resolution to the humanitarian challenge requires tackling the fundamental drivers of displacement, particularly the unresolved citizenship status of Rohingya in Myanmar. He underscored that Malaysia cannot alone shoulder the responsibility of providing refuge to hundreds of thousands of stateless individuals.

The call reflects mounting pressure on Southeast Asian nations, particularly Malaysia and Bangladesh, which together host the majority of Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar. Malaysia has been a primary destination for maritime arrivals, though the country has repeatedly expressed concerns about its capacity to manage the influx.
