Malaysia clarifies minister's remarks don't reflect official stance on workers

A Malaysian government spokesperson on Tuesday clarified that recent statements made by a state minister concerning 200,000 workers should not be interpreted as reflecting the country's official policy or stance on the issue.

The spokesperson emphasised that individual ministerial comments, particularly at the state level, do not necessarily align with the federal government's position on labour and employment matters. The clarification comes amid discussions about workers in the region, an issue of significant concern to Bangladesh given the large number of its nationals employed in Malaysia.

The statement underscores the importance of distinguishing between remarks made by individual officials and the formal positions adopted by governments. Malaysia is home to a substantial workforce from Bangladesh, with hundreds of thousands of workers engaged in various sectors of the economy.

Bilateral labour relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia have been a recurring focus of diplomatic engagement, with both nations working to ensure worker welfare and maintain stable employment frameworks.
