Malaysia continues search for 55 unaccounted citizens in Nepal

The Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the end of the SMART (Special Malaysia Rescue Team) operation in Nepal does not signify an end to attempts to establish the status and location of the missing citizens.

The 55 Malaysians had been unreachable since the operation commenced, prompting authorities to deploy search and rescue personnel to assist with verification efforts. The SMART mission, which had been coordinating with Nepali authorities and local officials, concluded its on-ground activities following an extensive search phase.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that despite the operational conclusion, diplomatic channels remain active to pursue further information regarding the missing nationals. The ministry said it would continue liaison efforts with Nepali counterparts and relevant agencies to resolve the matter.

The 55 individuals had been residing or working in Nepal prior to losing contact. Malaysian diplomatic missions in the region are maintaining heightened alert status and will continue engaging with local authorities to establish clarity on the situation, the ministry added.

Families of the missing individuals have been kept informed of developments, and the ministry urged the public to report any credible information that could assist in locating the nationals.
