Malaysia deploys cloud seeding to replenish dams in northern states
The Malaysian Meteorological Department has initiated cloud seeding operations across Perlis and Kedah in a bid to increase water levels in key reservoirs. The intervention forms part of efforts to address water supply concerns in the northern region.

The cloud seeding operation, known locally as Operasi Pembenihan Awan (OPA), was launched to artificially stimulate rainfall and boost water accumulation in dams serving the two northern states. The initiative represents a proactive measure by the government to maintain adequate water resources amid seasonal variations in precipitation.
Perlis and Kedah have been identified as priority areas for the intervention, with the operations targeting cloud formations above key water catchment zones. Cloud seeding involves dispersing substances such as silver iodide into clouds to encourage condensation and precipitation, a technique that has been employed in Malaysia for water management purposes.
The meteorological authority coordinates the timing and targeting of seeding flights based on weather patterns and cloud conditions. Such operations are typically conducted during periods when atmospheric conditions are suitable for maximum effectiveness in generating additional rainfall.
Water security remains a critical concern for northern Malaysia, with dam levels fluctuating seasonally. The cloud seeding programme complements other water management strategies employed by state authorities to ensure reliable supply during peak demand periods.
