KUALA LUMPUR — The education sector is set to receive a significant infrastructure boost as the government doubles its annual school repair allocation to RM2 billion for 2027, according to budget announcements made here on Wednesday.
Of the total allocation, RM1.3 billion has been designated for addressing deteriorating conditions in schools deemed to be in poor structural condition. The remaining funds will be distributed across routine maintenance and upgrade projects nationwide, representing a substantial increase from the current year's expenditure.
The enhanced funding reflects growing concerns over the state of educational infrastructure in Malaysia, where many schools—particularly in rural and underserved areas—have faced years of deferred maintenance. Education officials have indicated that the additional resources will prioritise urgent repairs affecting student safety and learning environments.
The allocation forms part of the broader 2027 federal budget framework and underscores the government's stated commitment to improving public school facilities. Education Ministry officials are expected to release detailed implementation plans in the coming weeks, outlining which institutions will benefit from the repair programmes and the timeline for project completion.
Experts have welcomed the budgetary commitment, noting that addressing school infrastructure deficits is crucial for ensuring equitable access to quality education across Malaysia's diverse regions.
