Malaysia escalates transboundary haze issue at ASEAN forum

PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia plans to raise the issue of transboundary haze pollution at an upcoming ASEAN meeting in Manila, signalling growing frustration over recurring air quality crises affecting the region. The move reflects Malaysia's determination to push for stronger regional cooperation in tackling the root causes of seasonal haze, which has become an annual challenge for multiple ASEAN member states.

The Malaysian government has called on Indonesia to implement more decisive and effective measures to combat forest and land fires, which are the primary source of the transboundary pollution affecting neighbouring countries. Officials emphasised the need for Indonesia to strengthen enforcement of environmental regulations and increase preventive measures during high-risk seasons.

The haze issue has long strained diplomatic relations within ASEAN, with affected nations repeatedly experiencing hazardous air quality levels that pose significant health risks to their populations. Previous regional agreements and commitments have had limited success in preventing the annual recurrence of the problem, prompting Malaysia to escalate the matter to a higher diplomatic platform.

The ASEAN meeting will provide an opportunity for Malaysia to formally advocate for enhanced regional mechanisms and greater accountability in addressing transboundary environmental challenges. Regional cooperation and coordinated action have been identified as essential components in mitigating the seasonal haze phenomenon that impacts air quality across Southeast Asia.
