KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia is actively considering a return to the Formula One World Championship calendar, potentially hosting the prestigious motorsport event annually or at multi-year intervals, according to the country's sports minister.
Government officials are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the costs and economic benefits associated with staging a Grand Prix, with the evaluation process expected to inform whether Malaysia will formally pursue a return to the circuit.
The announcement marks renewed interest from Malaysia in hosting one of motorsport's most high-profile events. The country previously hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit from 1999 to 2017, establishing itself as a key venue in the Asia-Pacific motorsports landscape.
The decision comes as Formula One continues to expand its global footprint, with numerous nations competing for slots on the annual racing calendar. Hosting a Grand Prix typically requires substantial infrastructure investment and organisational resources, though it generates significant tourism revenue and international media exposure for host nations.
