Malaysia exploring alternative venues for LIMA amid regional competition

Malaysia must continuously enhance its offerings to remain competitive as a host for major defence and aerospace exhibitions, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said, pointing to the need to evaluate alternative venues for the biennial Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA).

Khaled noted that improvements across multiple dimensions, including the scale of exhibition facilities and venue capacity, are essential to sustain Malaysia's standing in attracting such prestigious international events amid stiff regional competition.

The minister's comments reflect growing scrutiny of LIMA's infrastructure and logistics as neighbouring countries invest heavily in their own defence exhibitions and trade shows. Regional competitors have been upgrading facilities and expanding capabilities to draw exhibitors and participants away from established venues.

While no specific alternative locations have been announced, Khaled's remarks suggest that relevant authorities are assessing options to ensure the exhibition remains viable and appealing to international defence contractors and delegations. The evaluation is part of broader efforts to strengthen Malaysia's position as a hub for defence and maritime industries in Southeast Asia.
