The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has indicated that results from its ongoing feasibility study into reviving Malaysia's hosting of the Formula 1 Grand Prix will be tabled this November, according to the circuit's chief executive officer.
The study will examine various aspects required for Malaysia to resume its role as a Grand Prix host nation, addressing financial, operational, and infrastructural considerations. SIC's leadership has emphasized that the findings will form a crucial basis for government deliberations on the matter.
Malaysia previously hosted the F1 Grand Prix annually from 1999 to 2017 at the Sepang circuit located south of Kuala Lumpur. The decision to discontinue hosting the event came after concerns over rising costs and competing priorities for government funding.
The feasibility assessment comes amid renewed interest in motorsport events across the region and potential opportunities to leverage Malaysia's existing circuit infrastructure. However, officials have indicated that no final decision on hosting the Grand Prix will be made until the government has thoroughly reviewed the study's recommendations.
Stakeholders in the motorsport and tourism sectors have expressed hope that the analysis will demonstrate the viability of the proposal, citing potential economic benefits and opportunities to boost Malaysia's international sporting profile.
