Malaysia faces dengue crisis as cases surge 56% nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia is grappling with a significant dengue outbreak, with the Ministry of Health reporting a 56 per cent surge in cases and warning of potential nationwide spread. The alarming increase has prompted authorities to escalate public health measures and intensify disease control efforts across all states.

The spike represents a critical shift in the dengue situation, with health officials expressing concern about the trajectory of transmission. The ministry has attributed the rise to factors including favourable weather conditions for mosquito breeding and increased population movement, which have created ideal circumstances for the Aedes mosquito vector to proliferate.

In response to the crisis, the Ministry of Health has mobilised resources for enhanced surveillance and vector control operations. Authorities are conducting intensive fogging campaigns and community outreach programmes to educate the public on dengue prevention measures, including eliminating stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed.

Health officials are urging residents to take precautionary measures, including the use of insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and ensuring their homes are properly screened. Clinics and hospitals have been advised to enhance dengue detection and reporting protocols to facilitate rapid response.

The ministry has also called on local governments and community organisations to step up efforts in maintaining environmental cleanliness and reducing mosquito breeding sites in their respective areas.
