Malaysia guarantees 30% study quota for East Malaysian doctors

The Health Ministry will reserve at least 30% of study opportunities for medical professionals currently stationed in Sabah and Sarawak, according to an announcement made in Parliament. Health Minister Dzulkelfidzal Dzulkarnain framed the initiative as both a commitment and expression of appreciation for doctors working in East Malaysia, who often face geographical and professional challenges compared to their counterparts in peninsular Malaysia.

The guaranteed quota is intended to provide clearer pathways for career advancement and specialisation among East Malaysian medical practitioners. The measure addresses longstanding concerns about professional development opportunities in the region, where doctor shortages and limited access to advanced training programmes have been persistent challenges.

The commitment reflects broader government efforts to improve healthcare service delivery and retention of medical talent in East Malaysia. By ensuring dedicated study spaces and funding opportunities, the Health Ministry aims to strengthen the capacity and expertise of the region's healthcare workforce while recognising the sacrifices made by practitioners serving in remote and underserved areas.
