Malaysia has 15 months for reforms before next election, says DAP chief

PUTRAJAYA — The Democratic Action Party's top leader Anthony Loke said on Thursday that Malaysia's administration has adequate time to implement planned reforms before the next general election must be held.

Loke told reporters there is no urgency to trigger the 16th general election prematurely, as the government can utilise the remaining 15-month window to consolidate its reform agenda. He stressed that rushing into elections would not serve the nation's interests at this juncture.

The statement comes as political observers have speculated about the timing of Malaysia's next electoral cycle. The previous general election was held in November 2022, which brought the current coalition government to power.

Look's remarks suggest the ruling coalition intends to maintain its current parliamentary term while focusing on policy initiatives and governance improvements rather than pursuing an early election mandate.
