KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has done everything within its power to encourage Indonesia to address the escalating transboundary haze issue affecting both nations, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday.

Anwar stated that the government has maintained consistent diplomatic engagement with its neighbour to find solutions to the worsening air quality crisis. The regional haze problem, primarily caused by land-clearing fires in Indonesian territories, has repeatedly impacted air quality in Malaysia and surrounding countries.

The Prime Minister's remarks underscore the challenges Malaysia faces in addressing environmental issues that cross national borders, despite bilateral cooperation mechanisms already in place between the two countries.

The transboundary haze remains a recurring seasonal problem during the dry months, with both nations having established frameworks for collaboration including the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution. Malaysia continues to monitor the situation closely and appeal for greater enforcement measures from Indonesian authorities to prevent fires from spreading.
