Malaysia launches anonymous reporting system for smoking violations

Malaysia's Health Ministry has rolled out MyLapor, a digital platform designed to streamline the reporting of smoking-related violations across the country. The system allows citizens to submit complaints anonymously, addressing concerns about smoking in prohibited areas and other breaches of tobacco control regulations.

According to ministry officials, all reports filed through the platform will be systematically channelled to the nearest district health office serving the complainant's locality. This decentralised approach aims to ensure swift investigation and appropriate enforcement measures at the ground level.

The initiative represents an expansion of Malaysia's public health enforcement mechanisms, leveraging digital technology to engage citizens in regulatory compliance efforts. By offering anonymity protection, the platform seeks to encourage participation from individuals who may otherwise hesitate to report violations.

The MyLapor system forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the implementation of Malaysia's smoking regulations, which designate numerous public spaces as smoke-free zones. Officials have indicated that the platform complements existing enforcement channels and will help district health offices prioritise their field operations.

Members of the public can access the MyLapor platform to file complaints regarding observed smoking violations in their communities, with the Health Ministry handling submissions on a case-by-case basis.
