Malaysia launches dual IP push to unlock commercialisation potential

Malaysia's Ministry has unveiled a comprehensive two-pronged strategy to accelerate the commercialisation of intellectual property among domestic enterprises. The initiatives address a significant gap in the local innovation ecosystem, where many companies struggle to quantify and monetise their IP assets effectively.

The first component establishes a funding mechanism to subsidise the cost of professional intellectual property valuation services for Malaysian companies. This financial support aims to remove a key barrier to IP commercialisation, as valuation by qualified specialists can be prohibitively expensive for small and medium-sized enterprises seeking to leverage their intellectual property for business growth.

Complementing the funding initiative is Malaysia's inaugural IP valuation module, designed to build local expertise and capacity in this critical area. The training programme will equip professionals and business leaders with the knowledge required to assess and unlock the commercial potential of intellectual property holdings.

The dual initiatives underscore the government's commitment to fostering a more dynamic innovation economy. By reducing financial obstacles and building technical capability, policymakers hope to encourage greater uptake of IP commercialisation strategies across the business community, ultimately strengthening Malaysia's competitive position in knowledge-based industries.
