Malaysia levies steep anti-dumping duties on steel imports from Asia

Malaysia's trade ministry has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties of up to 35 percent on flat-rolled steel products imported from China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The tariffs aim to protect domestic steel manufacturers from artificially low-priced imports.

Malaysia levies steep anti-dumping duties on steel imports from Asia

The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) announced the provisional duties following an investigation into dumping practices in the flat-rolled steel sector. The tariffs, which will remain in place during the investigative period, represent a significant protective measure for Malaysia's steel industry amid concerns about market distortion from subsidized imports.

Flat-rolled steel products are widely used across Malaysia's manufacturing, construction, and automotive sectors. The ministry's action reflects growing concern that below-cost imports from major regional producers have undercut local manufacturers and disrupted fair market competition.

The provisional duties are set to remain effective while Miti completes its formal investigation into the dumping allegations. Importers of flat-rolled steel from the three countries will be required to pay the additional tariffs until a final determination is made, which typically takes several months.

The move aligns with Malaysia's commitment to safeguarding domestic industries under World Trade Organization anti-dumping protocols, which permit member nations to impose duties when imports are sold below fair value and cause material injury to local producers.
