Malaysia must adopt agility to weather economic headwinds, says Khazanah

Malaysia needs to adopt the strategic agility of the clever mouse from local folklore to successfully navigate mounting economic pressures, according to Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir, managing director of state investment firm Khazanah Nasional.

Unlike larger economies with greater financial cushions, Malaysia faces heightened vulnerability to external shocks such as supply chain disruptions, Amirul Feisal said. The country's economic structure requires a more nimble and adaptive approach to withstand emerging challenges.

The reference to the "sang kancil"—the quick-witted mouse deer from Malay folklore known for outsmarting larger adversaries—underscores the need for Malaysia to leverage intelligence and agility rather than relying on scale or reserves.

Khazanah, which manages Malaysia's sovereign wealth and strategic investments, has increasingly emphasized the importance of economic resilience and diversification as the region grapples with geopolitical tensions, inflationary pressures, and shifting global trade patterns.

Amirul Feisal's remarks come amid broader concerns about Malaysia's economic outlook, with policymakers seeking to strengthen the nation's capacity to absorb and recover from external economic shocks.
