Malaysia must adopt 'Sang Kancil' agility to weather economic storms

Malaysia needs to embrace the resourcefulness of Sang Kancil, the legendary mouse deer from Southeast Asian folklore, to successfully navigate mounting economic headwinds, according to Khazanah Nasional Managing Director Amirul Feisal Wan Zahir.

Unlike major developed economies, Malaysia does not possess significant financial cushions to absorb shocks from supply chain disruptions, commodity price volatility, and other external pressures, Amirul Feisal noted. The observation underscores the vulnerability of medium-sized economies in an increasingly interconnected global market where disruptions can cascade rapidly through trading networks.

The Sang Kancil metaphor reflects the need for strategic agility and quick thinking rather than brute economic strength. Khazanah, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund and strategic investment vehicle, has positioned itself as a key player in steering the nation's economic direction during turbulent periods.

The warning comes amid global economic uncertainty, rising geopolitical tensions, and structural shifts in international trade patterns that continue to challenge Southeast Asian economies. Policymakers and business leaders across Malaysia are increasingly focused on building resilience and diversifying economic dependencies to reduce exposure to external shocks.

Khazanah's perspective reflects broader concerns within Malaysia's economic establishment about the need for strategic flexibility and forward-thinking approaches to ensure sustained growth and stability in the coming years.
