PUTRAJAYA — Malaysia's shift towards a high-value economy hinges on the country's ability to cultivate and retain highly skilled professionals across critical sectors, Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said on Monday.
Addressing the need for workforce transformation, Zambry emphasised that developing talent with specialised expertise is essential as Malaysia competes with neighbouring economies in attracting investment and fostering innovation-driven industries.
The minister's remarks underscore ongoing government efforts to align the education and training systems with economic priorities, particularly in emerging fields such as technology, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. Officials have signalled that both public and private institutions must collaborate to bridge skills gaps and prepare graduates for evolving market demands.
Malaysia's economic strategy increasingly relies on moving away from labour-intensive industries towards sectors that generate higher value-added output. Stakeholders have noted that this transition requires not only investment in education infrastructure but also stronger partnerships between industry and academic institutions to ensure curricula remain relevant to employer needs.
The government has indicated it will continue prioritising human capital development as a cornerstone of its broader economic transformation agenda.
