SHAH ALAM — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on UiTM to establish a quantum department, emphasizing Malaysia's need to keep pace with global advancements in quantum computing and related technologies.
Addressing concerns that Malaysia could lag behind regional and international competitors in this critical field, Zahid stressed the importance of developing local expertise and research capabilities in quantum science. The initiative would position Malaysia as a player in one of the most promising technological frontiers.
As one of the country's premier technical universities, UiTM would be well-positioned to spearhead quantum research and education, providing the skilled workforce needed to support Malaysia's technology sector. Zahid's remarks underscored the government's broader efforts to advance the nation's scientific and technological capabilities.
The call reflects growing global recognition of quantum technology's transformative potential across industries including finance, healthcare, and cybersecurity. Several neighbouring countries have already invested significantly in quantum research programs, creating urgency for Malaysia to develop comparable expertise and infrastructure.
