Malaysia must extend neurodivergent support beyond childhood, says Shukri

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia must develop a more comprehensive support system for neurodivergent adults as their aging parents are no longer able to provide care, Deputy Minister Nancy Shukri has said.
Currently, government intervention and support services for neurodivergent individuals such as those with autism spectrum disorder focus heavily on childhood years. However, Shukri highlighted the critical need to extend these services into adulthood to ensure continuity of care and social integration.
The comments underscore a growing concern among policymakers and families about the gap in support systems for neurodivergent adults. Without adequate planning and resources, many individuals face uncertain futures once parental caregivers are unable to manage their needs.
Shukri's remarks come as Malaysia continues to develop its disability and social welfare framework. Advocates have called for improved vocational training, employment opportunities, and residential support services tailored to neurodivergent adults to promote their independence and quality of life.
The government has indicated plans to review and strengthen existing programmes, though specific timelines and budget allocations remain under consideration.
