Malaysia must not pass refugee crisis to future generations, says Lim

Kepong Member of Parliament Lim has expressed support for the government's negotiations with Myanmar on the refugee issue, but stressed that any return of displaced persons must be handled with stringent safeguards.

The DAP politician's comments reflect growing concern among Malaysian lawmakers about the country's prolonged refugee burden. Malaysia currently hosts one of Southeast Asia's largest populations of Rohingya and other displaced communities, straining social services and creating economic pressures.

While acknowledging the government's diplomatic approach, Lim cautioned against accepting repatriation arrangements that could compromise the welfare of vulnerable populations. He emphasized that Malaysia cannot afford to defer difficult decisions on refugee management to future administrations.

The statement comes as the government pursues multilateral discussions aimed at addressing root causes of displacement in Myanmar and finding sustainable regional solutions. Malaysia has long called for coordinated international action to resolve protracted refugee situations in Southeast Asia, arguing that burden-sharing among nations is essential.
