Malaysia must not rely on gas market favours, says economy minister

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia needs to adopt a more strategic approach to its natural gas sector rather than relying on market fluctuations, according to Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli. The government is in the final stages of developing a Natural Gas Roadmap (NGR) that will establish a coordinated framework for the sector's growth and sustainability.

Rafizi emphasised that the roadmap represents a significant policy shift aimed at reducing the country's vulnerability to global gas price volatility and market uncertainties. The initiative reflects growing recognition that Malaysia's energy security and economic resilience depend on diversified strategies rather than passive reliance on external market conditions.

The Natural Gas Roadmap is expected to provide comprehensive guidance across the energy value chain, including production, distribution, and utilisation. Officials indicated that the framework will align with broader national development objectives while ensuring competitiveness in the regional energy market.

The move comes as Malaysia seeks to balance its position as a major natural gas producer with the need for sustainable energy policies. Industry observers note that having a structured roadmap could help the country navigate economic challenges while maintaining its role in the regional energy landscape.
